If you're like me and always have a lot of tabs open, try an extension called BarTab. It works with Firefox 3.6.x. Not sure of the status with FF4 because I quickly "downgraded" after trying it. There's also a preference "config.trim_on_minimize", with which you could experiment by setting to "true". You will need to create the preference in about:config as it doesn't exist by default. Alternatively, it can be toggled from the "Configuration Mania" extension. The preference only has an effect on Windows.

"config.trim_on_minimize" had this set in every version of FF. Frees really up some RAM, but as soon as you maximize the window again, FF starts loading from swapfile to RAM until the original value is about reached.
Did i mention that FF does not react during that time? :ermm:

So, finished my tests with FF4. Still no real improvement over older FF.
After only 1 day of use, FF uses 478MB RAM and 569MB swapfile. After all pages have been closed!!
The rest of my system, with XP and about 20 open programs running for over a week, takes only 289MB RAM and 341MB swapfile.

The only way to keep FF from hogging RAM is, to restart it every hour or so.
