sorry, wimb, I am not sure I have understood correctly: on other machines? what other machines? I only have this machine here for this wim+vhd. I might make a copy of the vhd, just in case something goes wrong, but this machine here is as far as it goes. when I had 1.5gb vhds, used space would stay turquoise (would not go red) for quite some time (a whole day). the only trobled situation was when I used wpsoffice for document editing, then I saw it grow to critical proportions, leaving only a few kbs, which made me resort to expanding my vhd to 2gb. from then on, no trouble at all.

Personal preference and Purpose may vary ....
I copy my VHD + WIM to Portable SSD and use the Update WimBoot button of VHD_WIMBOOT and Make Boot files on Portable SSD, so that the combi is Bootable again.
In this way I get a Portable Win10 x64 booting from Portable SSD, which can connect to any machine.
Instead of carrying a laptob with you, now I only carry the portable SSD and have my own computer with all programs and data on any place available ....

how about drivers on a per-machine basis; don't they vary from 1 machine to another?

Sure , but Win 10 x64 will auto install and collect these drivers .....

First on your own machine use VHD_WIMBOOT and use Upd WimBoot and then also Make Boot button to make the combi bootable from USB
Check that you can boot from USB on your machine
Then on other machine After BIOS beep press F8 and select to boot from your Portable SSD .....

Booting from USB will require press F8 to select Portable SSD from menu
In BIOS you can of course change the Boot Priority so that you boot all the time from Portable SSD and don't need to press F8

Moederbordname: MSI Z97I Gaming ACK (MS-7920) (1 PCI-E x16, 2 DDR3 DIMM, Audio, Video, Gigabit LAN, WiFi)
Ps. I like the Upd WimBoot option.
Tested and working, copied wimboot setup from internal hd to usb hd and used your Upd WimBoot option.
Only question is why does it need the Wimboot folder to work on copied setup?
Ps2. i only tested the wimboot setup not the wimboot to ram setup.

portable ssd? i have fixed ssd on the other machine; I was talking portable usb; once I booted from portable usb on the other machine ok, can I make the wim+vhd combo on usb the regular combo on this other machine as well (fixed ssd), since u said it updates all drivers to adjust to the new machine?

Thanks for testing Upd WimBoot option.
I think you are right there is no need for the WIM file to be in a folder.
It originated from the Capture Function in a wish to have an ordered set of numbered Capture WIM files.
But for VHD WIMBOOT this organisation is not needed .....

I am using SAMSUNG Portable SSD T5 250 GB
Portable SSD is much faster than USB Portable Harddisk
You might copy the VHD + WIM combo to the harddisk of that other machine and use the Upd WimBoot to make it bootable.
I think it will work, Win 10 x64 will auto adjust to that machine and missing drivers will be auto installed.
But the best is of course to test it and then you get the eXPerience ....

right u r!
I checked ur portable ssd on the link: it looks like it rocks, but the price is insane.
Thanks for everything.
Everything runs fine here.
What else can I ask u ... can u think of a bootloader that's as quick as or even quicker than conventional windows bootmgr? booting is the least fast task here: 24 to 30 seconds is too long for an intel i9, 64gb ddr4 ram, nvme+m.2+ssd's (no conventional hdd) machine, I guess.

I would say that a more modest ADATA 256 GB or a Transcend ESD220C 240 GB are all in all affordable (examples, can be found around 60-70 Euro).
El-cheapo (but still without going entirely into the no-name realm),a SSD 240GB Verbatim 410/540 Vi500 + an external 2.5 case USB 3.1 should be around or below 50 Euro.

thanx for telling, wonko.
how about speeding up svbus or tweaking bootmgr into ramloading as well?
And, most of all, why not try to publicize (n.b., not advertise) this wim&vhd setup combo erga omnes?
I do not think it is ethical, or simply fair, on the IT-uneducated to make them believe it takes 70gigs to have windows on their pcs. I think we can do something for the world.

Update VHD_WIMBOOT Version 1.8
- WIM File does not need to be anymore in Wimboot folder, but can also be in root of System Drive
Download: VHD_WIMBOOT

Good ideas, first possible, second not so much.how about speeding up svbus or tweaking bootmgr into ramloading as well?
Allow me to disagree, it is perfectly ethical and fair. And, most of all, why not try to publicize (n.b., not advertise) this wim&vhd setup combo erga omnes?

The whole point of the IT-uneducated condition is that it is both a changeable state and a voluntary one.
There are no barriers of access to the knowledge and to the tools used, if anyone wants to find about a PC booting matter can easily find the resources on the internet, and in the case of reboot.pro join the board or - if he/she prefers - simply lurk around.
Sure, we could found a corp of missionaries and go around spreading the word.I think we can do something for the world.
We will need to start drafting an oath[1] and find a name for the corp of missionaries.
Since we are in the 21st century we might need also an insurance covering damages to people that listened to us and managed to wipe their systems or similar, besides achieving ISO 9001 certification.

[1] something along the lines of the hyppocratic oath

Exactly, let us do it!
When I am back from Saturnia!
Wait a minute, what makes you so sure that you will pass the admission exam to the corp?
About the name, I was thinking of something distinctive, *like*:
Compagnia Anonima Zelanti di Zagarolo, Ordine dei Nuovi Informatori
ma temo l'uso dell'acronimo ...
