Yes I am aware you are the devloper - thus the AHEM at the end.  Perhaps I sould have said nudge,nudge  or wink wink.

As for my knowledge in higher languages....I program in assembler because I LIKE IT, and I do in Windows, and BTW you CAN program at as "high" a level as you like/need in assembler.  As for this discussion, since Winbuilder is a system - IMO it should provide basic information, or API's (whatever) that could be used by the scripts that run within said system.  I am not trying to put more work on you, or detract from the fine work that has been done.  Just making inquires as to what was available.

 

My boring history with all things computer;

Building electronic projects when I was 9, built several analogue computers by age 10 or 11 (electronic slide rules of sorts)

Built and programmed a Cosmac Elf in Jr. College     Addicted to ML programming.

Interfaced to and programmed an an old PDP11 in college, along with learning programming in Fortran and Cobol on an IBM mainframe.

Punchcards,paper tape, Teletype terminals (shudder) and other (now) outdated crap.

Learned Basic on a Interact Model 1 (8080 based) but wrote my own ML assembler for it using the ROM basic then got an Atari 800.

Learned BASIC, and C (Deep Blue C compiler) but went back to ML (6502) on it as well.

Again BASIC on an IBM XT, tried M$ macro assembler -HATED IT. Learned Watcom C (loved it), eventualy C++ (also hated it).

Windows came along,played with visual basic and the first ver of M$ Visual C (I think they called it).

Long gap with ocassional bouts writing SQL, batch files, a couple of other scripting languages, but nothing constant.  Took up ML programming on/off several more times over the years.  But mostly not, never have time  -and I forget too much in each gap.

So now, I am your problem (not - just kidding)

Which is useless regarding what I want to know, and why I came asking... So it would seem I need to ASK the right question.

What are the PROJECT variables - and are they even close to being constant ACROSS projects, and thus (drum roll) what would be the valid range of values for the PROJECT variables?  I am begining to suspect I am in a version of an Abbot & Costello routine.

If the %var% is used in the script, I am talking GLOBAL, I ASSumed it was set by a script and not copied from the windows environment.

 

My question regarding the particular variable was as to the SOURCE version, which would not be in the Windows environment (except when they are the same).

 

SOMEWHERE, it seems to me, the project must know what the source (and thus the target) os version is. Or maybe NOT?

Given that a project has a fixed target, eg Win7PESE, vs LiveXP,etc, there must be SOMETHING that would be a reliable indicator that an App script could use to know the intended target is.  If SP level etc has not been ascertained {all you clever guys haven't done this already?   } then that would be left as a study in methodology.

 

All this being said, is there a list of valid values for the WinBuilder variables?

I feel so noobish.    I can't seem to find anything that lists the possible valid values for all the variables used in scripts. (Race is on to point to what I can't find by search)

So, for example, if I want to tweak a script based on the SOURCE OS, I would prsumably use %OS% but what values can it have?

Win7 shows in mine because that is what I build from/for.  Would Win5 <XP>,Win6 <or vista>,Win8 be valid? And in this example would there be differentation for Service Pack levels?

Is %SysType% the host arch?  Assuming source indicated by %SourceArch%,

Yah, got that myself.    Uploaded the ver 3 twice more and still got ver 1 back!  Deleted all the versions and uploaded a 3rd time - success!

I got a response back from Piriform regarding use of the files in the script.

I sent this:  "I want to ask if you would grant permission to add defraggler to a script file that is used to install programs to a CD/DVD/USB for use under WinPE. The script is used by WinBuilder and the one I wrote includes the defraggler exe files, the DeFraggler icon and a simple product description; "Piriform Ltd. Disk Defragmenter (2.13.0.670)."

I can't duplicate the problem.  And that reg entry is pretty simple, so as to NOT use defraggler as the default, which should be the least problematic.

But your problem is during the actual script run - not the program.  Why would it error on a REG_DWORD key???

I hadn't even looked into speed thing yet, as I was mostly curious as to IF this had been tried already.  But the amount of data in that test was MUCH larger, and if it was only a minute faster then you are dead on that it would only save seconds (if that.)  Not worth the effort to mod a script - much less doing test builds.

It works fine on my win7 sp1 x64.  What version are you using?  Will look into it this evening.  Maybe requires an option in interface as well?

In Win7 the SystemDrive gets a special icon, non-available removable drives get greyed out and optical media drives get a better decription than all just being called a CDROM.

Until this night, I was only building up to the virtual point, and so I ignored that meassage.  NOW, that it didn't load after booting from DVD - I went through the log and saw the errors for the reg entries - but that didn't fix it as it still complained.  Did a regshot on my x64 after install and saw missing files, and different reg entries.  Running 9.2.1 - it does work if I install in the win7pe. DOH!!  Should have read the forum BEFORE I downloded version 5...   over 30 years in engineering & support and I am STILL relearning to "RTFM"

So, this morning I finished my tweaks (everything looks good and seems working in the virtual machine) so tonight I will FINALLY make a bootable DVD - with Boot USB to follow when I get a new one.

 

SO, I am thinking to experiment by invoking teracopy in the three areas that are the time hogs of the many builds.

Those being the two driver related scripts and the one in finals 'YY_1 something' that do a lot of file copy & move operations.

 

Has anyone tried this, and if so, was there enough speed boost to be worth it?

 

I realize to include this in a standard build would at the least require adding teracopy to the utilities and running it in standalone mode.  So perhaps that is more bother - but I am currious.

Yes, I understood.  Never meant to steal/break the law.  Also, for this particular version of recuva, Piriform does not want it hosted elsewhere, nor any direct download links.  Other than stating it is for administrators, I don't see why - but am abiding their wishes and only link to the page where the different versions can then be DL'd.

Since windows 2000 days, I have used the desktop ini file to set drive icons (to look like a drive with a large drive letter on it).

I keep a 'stash' of images for that - hmm, wonder if I should put them in a dll - think I will look into that.  Anyway, this would not work for random drives or those of a host system.  What are you looking to do regarding the icons?

While writing some scripts it has occurred to me several times now,that it would be handy to know what drive a host system (the one under repair) is mounted on.  I could make a cmd script to do this that would then place the result in an environment variable like HostDrive or Host System,etc.  I could also write a quick proggie to do this in assembler.

 

So I have several questions:

1) Would this be useful to anyone else?

2)  What would be the preferred name of the variable?

3)  Is there a way to determine this already, and I would be waisting my time?

4)  Should this process be done in the Windows reg during startup, or is there a better place.  I would think the sooner during boot, the better.

 

By any chance did you specify the load (in control panel) to be a drive or a CD? 

Since the default on the command line is to load a nrg file as a CD, if the image is a drive image that could confuse it.

I have noticed on my system the control panel applet defaults to drive instead of CD when mounting an iso.

Uhhh OP?  I placed a link to the klinzmann site on the interface, was that not enough?  The authors text file is also in the build explaining the terms of use.  I could certainly place the text from it onto the interface as well.

As for the license...I am actually going to add a checkbox to include a users license (if they have one) to the build to disable the startup nag.

Can the converter program mount those images that it converts?  Could be defective/incorrect conversion.  Try a different conversion program.

I use nero but often find that that programs lack of support for iso to be quite frustrating.  I use feeware to convert nrg to iso with no problem.

When I get home tonight, I will post the name of the converter program (can't remember the name) that I use.

BTW; Pulling content out of a bootable image to place in a new image does not make the new image bootable - the new image needs a boot loader.
