That looks awesome. Though, unfortunately when I go to download the project, it fails and doesn't go to the download page. I am going to continue trying, but so far it looks like creating my own will be the best option for me.

please have also a look at:

Please use this or this ISO as source (Windows7 x86 sp0) & and a proper download manager when downloading.

This script cannot run in LiveXP.

Peter

BTW: are you still interested that I download and look into the code?

#168555 Ridiculous password rules

Posted by pscEx on 28 February 2013 - 05:15 PM in Community forum

Several years ago I decided for a simple solution.

I use KeePass to maintain my passwords.

I only have to remember my master password for KeyPass.

With KeyPass all passwords can be generated according the server's rules, and look as strange as "1cPgT5IPcVDQNc6UGcHw".

Because they are really not keepable in mind, at my car keychain (which I usually have with me, when I'm out of my home) I have an USB stick with KeyPass and it's database.

In my home FireFox with the KeyPass plugin does everything necessary.

#168509 Reboot Competition: The smallest Win7 PE bootdisk

Posted by pscEx on 27 February 2013 - 05:10 PM in News

Maybe Peter finds some time to create and upload a special version of the project that is "frozen" so that other users can replicate the results. This would be interesting to keep in future years from now.

Everything I published during the competition, was part of the actual multiPE project which I changed accordingly :smart:

When you download multiPE from the download center, you can reproduce the "downsized" PEs by

  • Start the multiPE project
  • Choose a source CD folder
  • Using  multiPE > Tools > WB Manager
  • Choose W7_Micro, W7_Nano or W7_Pico resp and click "Restore Set"
  • Click the blue "Build" triangle

For the future, W7_Micro, W7_Nano or W7_Pico will not be changed because they are "experimental", not "productive" :smart:

BTW: The W7_Standard ISO is also rather small with about 110 MB.

#168487 Korrektes Posten

Posted by pscEx on 27 February 2013 - 12:53 PM in Deutschsprachiges Forum

Hallo Forum

There is a small "security" aspect.

When any user clicks the "Donate" button, he gets a page displaying your paypal registered e-mail adress as recipient.

Upgrade your paypal account from "private" to "business", and then you can define what is displayed (in my case now pscEx).

The upgrade is not combined with any costs or fees increase.

#168296 Little Problem with Missing Registry Key

Posted by pscEx on 22 February 2013 - 02:41 PM in Win7PE

You opened the "default" hive.

I suggest not to use the API, but regular WinBuilder code. That makes everything more understandable.

RegHiveLoad,WB-Software,%target_sys%\config\software
RegWrite,HKLM,0x?,WB-Software\Wow ...
...
RegHiveUnload,WB-Software

Take care that the \Software\ part is missing in the suggested code.

RegWrite,HKLM,0x4,SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\TeamViewer\Version6\DefaultSettings,Autostart_GUI,"00000001"

#167895 API has no certification!

Posted by pscEx on 14 February 2013 - 03:44 PM in Support

is a step too late

:dubbio:

The first introduction to that method has been made in 2009: http://reboot.pro/to...ity/#entry76322

At that time Vista PE projects have been in the very beginning, and Win7 was unknown.

The idea was fully supported by the LiveXP development team and Lancelot created the keys for developers asking for it.

After he and some other people decided to make the revolution here, become bakers and forget or fight against their previous "life", I continued as "key generator".

Using a completely unneeded certification tool for something that makes little sense

:dubbio:

Intelligent people can find the sence in the above link.

If they see only little sence, why they did not give their concerns 4 years ago?

BTW: @Wonko: You are well known here as person with sharp and logical behavement.
But due to the above quoted post I have some concerns: Even if something only makes little sence, the tool to perform the "something", cannot be unneeded gererally.

It can only be "not needed" for the individual user, when he decides not to process the "something".

and that additionally requires "begging" to get included in the "private club

:dubbio:

At the stone-aged Lancelot time as well as now, nobody has to beg for a key.

There is no automatism which sends the key to every reboot.pro developer, but a PM of a serious reboot.pro member with the request has been and is still sufficient.

#167610 Mozilla Firefox universal

Posted by pscEx on 10 February 2013 - 04:48 PM in App Scripts

I love FIREFOX

I am busy upgrading my pe to WIN7PE_SE

Can you give a list of system dependency's?

FireFox seems to moan about missing things like

msdmo.dll

api-ms-win-core-com-l1-1-0.dll

ect...

That is caused by a violence of my standard "App Script Rule":

A good app script has to be self supporting. It must not assume that the parent project offers every (rarelly used) file which is needed.

Unfortunatelly this rule is not understood by many bakers.

Peter

BTW:

After a change in [variables] according my above post, and after adding one line to [Process], I got this in multiPE:

firefox_multiPE.gif

#167603 Mozilla Firefox universal

Posted by pscEx on 10 February 2013 - 04:15 PM in App Scripts

I tried to use the script in multiPE, and "was attacked" by a serious bug:

[Variables]
%CustomCopy%=?
%DownloadFolder%="%GlobalSupport%\Downloads\%ProgramFolder%"
%ProgramExe%=firefox.exe
%ProgramFolder%=Firefox
%ProgramTitle%=Firefox
%SumatraPDFComponent%=%ProjectDir%\Apps\Supplementary\Office\SumatraPDF_universal.script
%TargetFfxIni%="%TargetDir%\Users\Default\AppData\Roaming\Mozilla\Firefox"

Here %ProgramFolder% is used in definition of %DownloadFolder% before it is defined. The value can be very random, depending on the script build history until 'now'.

BTW: Would be nice if you do not download firefox on every script run.

It should be downloaded when not yet on the user's pc, or when wanted in the interface GUI.

#167508 Construction Failed at WIN7PE

Posted by pscEx on 09 February 2013 - 04:02 PM in Win7PE

And yes, I am trying to make a Windows OS that runs from a USB drive and can have portable programs added to it.

Then the projects with e "PE" in the name are not suited for you.

I'm very confused because multi pe uses winbuilder to work?

Yes, multiPE is a WinBuilder project.

Briefly explained:

multiPE is a collection of batch scripts, containing WinBuilder language script lines.

WinBuilder is the batch processor which processes all scripts.

The result is a bootable ISO you can burn to a CD, or some bootable contents written onto an UFD.

Peter

#167502 WBS2reg

Posted by pscEx on 09 February 2013 - 01:34 PM in Project forge

WBS2RegPrg does not know API.

It builds a *.reg file from WinBuilder "RegWrite" scriptlines.

But try this: Replace the highly sophisticated "reg_add" API command simply by "RegWrite,HKLM".

Maybe it is also necessary to replace a "%reg%" by "WB-Software" or whatever is applicable.

If that works, I'll add to WBS2RegPrg.

#167500 Construction Failed at WIN7PE

Posted by pscEx on 09 February 2013 - 01:10 PM in Win7PE

All of the projects I have tried so far have failed.
Does anyone have a project that actually works to run Win7 from a USB stick?

I would very much appreciate if anyone knows of one that works that they'd let me know :)

Let us clarify first:

When you want to boot a real Win7 OS from and UFD, AFAIK there is no WinBuilder project which can create this. Maybe there are some tutorials how to ceate w/o WinBuilder.

But I assume that you want to create a Win7 PE booting from an UFD.

And here in post #2 I already suggested multiPE. Creating a bootable Win7 PE UFD, is one of the standard functionalities of multiPE.

When you have had no succes right now with multiPE, maybe you did something wrong.

Follow exactly these instructions.

#167463 Construction Failed at WIN7PE

Posted by pscEx on 08 February 2013 - 08:29 PM in Win7PE

First: Bienvenido a nuestro foro!

Second: I'm sorry that I cannot help directly.

The project you use is not originated in this forum. It only uses Winbuilder as batch processing engine for the project.

But maybe I can give you general hints:

The command logged with error result, should generally work well. Maybe there is an hardware issue in your PC.

Try manually in cmd window

move %BaseDir%\Target\Win7PESE\ProgramData %BaseDir%\ISO\WIM\boot.tmp

Replace %BaseDir% by your actual path, and do not forget to enclose in quotes, when %BaseDir% contains spaces.

If you get errors here, you see the reason.

The log tells about a process time of about more than 1 hour.

It is rather disappointing, to wait one hour and then getting the message "Sorry"

You should try one of the projects which are offered in reboot.pro for download, e.g. multiPe

That will finish in about 3 minutes (In the first start it perhaps downloads some files. That will need about 0 .. 20 minutes, depending on your current configuration.)

#167272 Code boxes messed up

Posted by pscEx on 05 February 2013 - 03:49 PM in Site feedback

To give fun, I can report a personal experience wich may be just the opposite of Wonko's experiences.

Long time ago, in the end of the seventies, I had to port an existing system. Not only to a new database, but also to a new hardware.

Therefore a "Write new from scratch" was the best solution at that time.

When I explored the existing system, I got a database key, let it name "xyz" here, where I could not identify how it was used in the running system.

Asking the users for the purpose of the key, gave such senceful replies like "We need it". The most sophistcated reply I remember was "That is real money for us"

I decided to include xyz in the new entry mask, and to store in WOM (Write Only Memory) :buehehe:

The porting has been a full success, everything worked well, and all users were happy.

I would like to know how many time has been accumulated in the life time of the porting, by typing xyz sencelessly into a field.

#167240 multiPE

Posted by pscEx on 05 February 2013 - 11:00 AM in Projects

Hi Ivan!

Should work with multiPE and every XP source CD. Can you give me a legal URL where I can download the XP source CD you used? I'll try with this.

I already thought about jaws.

What me prohibited was the price. Therefore in May 2012 I asked the jaws company whether I can get a free licence.

Question:

I'm the current developer of WinBuilder, and developed a PE containing NVDA.
I would like to also offer commercial products like JAWS.

The reason which hinders me, you can read here:
http://reboot.pro/16844/#entry155172
Question: Is it possible to get a free license, because I do not really need the product? Maybe that helps you to sell it some more.

Answer:

Sehr geehrter Herr Schlang,

Mfg

It seems that they really do not understand the issue, or do not want to accept that I do every reboot.pro work for no money,

Maybe this tutorial helps: http://reboot.pro/to...ine/#entry14153

Second:

Interface values can be changed from outside, and then WinBuilder can be started via command line.

Translation: It is not sufficient to create an [interface_czech]. for full language translation it is also necessary to change the "_default.txt" file which contains the WinBuilder GUI translations.

The number of characters must not necessarily stay constant, as long as the string fits into the available space.

#167101 Which projects can already build from Win8 final?

Posted by pscEx on 03 February 2013 - 07:48 PM in Win8PE

...  that independently developed .scripts or projects ...

As very sophisticated philosoph, you should recognize, that we here are speaking about the "Non-existent" private Winbuilder 083x, which by mistake is declared by somebody as "Test version"

I do not know any restrictions for scripts in 083. Maybe you to try to distinguish between "Scripts" and "Projects".

And with WinBuilder 082, I do not know any restriction for any script / project.

Winbuilder 83.0.0.X currently should only be used in the multipe project.

To be more precise:

Winbuilder 83.0.0.X currently should only be used in the multipe projects wich are due to reboot.pro's license conditions.

#167095 Run from RAM etc.

Posted by pscEx on 03 February 2013 - 07:11 PM in Development

I can not find The .img file with virtual harddisk after finishing creation of bootable USB stick.

The project is fully functional, but where is The virtual harddisk file? Or must i manually copy it from some Multipe subfolder to The root folder of USB stick to make it work?

The script portable manager and Clamwin portable can create virtual local disk T: i see it on my computer, which is building The project.

Should be done automatically when you create the USB stick.

To compare: In my system it is on <usb>\multiVHD\multiPA_VHD.img.

In the PE this image is mounted as T:

Maybe I made a mistake.

Please post the log.

#167070 Run from RAM etc.

Posted by pscEx on 03 February 2013 - 04:54 PM in Development

A vhd is only writable if its on writable media. Its not writable on DVD.

The Virtual Hard Disk is an image placed "anywhere" and a writable file.

The VHD is written to the local host, and in case of booting from CD / DVD automatically opened.

That is good for PE's  you only use in your local PC. For system administrators, of course, that does not work when they use the DVD on several systems.

Full use of the  VHD feature is possible only when you create a USB stick. Then the image is optionally copied to the USB stick.

There is a current manual workaround for use on DVD boot:

Copy the VHD image onto a local (or USB removable) disk, and manualy create an ImDisk hard disk from it.

I developed with regard to your "ClamWinPortable" question!

So the answer is a clear "YES".

Try to add "!multiPE Portable Apps" and maybe read http://reboot.pro/to...tc/#entry167011

I did not try your description about placing swap file in this virtual hard disk. But I'm sure, you do not need a swap file in the PE.

#167011 Run from RAM etc.

Posted by pscEx on 02 February 2013 - 07:09 PM in Development

Maybe this topic is better placed in "Tutorials". If yes, some admin may move there.

In XP (nativeEx and LiveXP) ice-age, app scripts got hard coded whether they should run directly from CD, or be included in the (provided by the nativeEx functionality) RAM disk.

Starting with Vista, NightMan invented the choice "Run from RAM", "Run from CD".

The app has been either included in the generated WIM, or copied to the "Rest of the world" in the generated ISO.

This method is used by most currently existing PE2 / PE3 projects.

With PE3 projects, the option to generate multiboot CDs, came up.

Here the first issue: (Example for the next is Opera-CD by Medevil, which can be run strictly from CD)

You generate a multiboot CD with PE1, PE2, PE3. All of the projects have Opera-CD. So it is burned three times with 6 MB to the final CD.

To avoid this redundancy, the option "Boot from BootMedia" is the solution. When creating the final multiBoot ISO, Opera-CD is only copied once to the root of the CD, outside the different PEx images. Shortcuts are adjusted to this configuration.

Now a small challenge:

You have an app which usually could run "Boot from CD" or "Boot from BootMedia".

But unfortunatelly this app sometimes updates some data from internet and writes them into the running PE, and therefore the data must be writable. Example: A virus scanner needs the latest data.

First solution: "Run from RAM" is not the best one:

When you are working with an old PC with maybe only 512 MB of RAM, RAM size could be insufficient to store the data. And next boot, you have to download the latest definitions again, ...

Better solution: "Run from VHD" (Virtual Hard Disk). The Virtual Hard Disk is an image placed "anywhere" and a writable file. All the new virus definitions are written into this file and available next boot.

FAQ: Where can I find all this functionality?

Answer: In multiPE

multiPE version 070 is uploaded!

What's New in Version 70

  • Rearranged certification. pre-082 certification is never used and obsolete. Added certification83 which does not enclose empty lines to calculation.
  • Rearranged portable apps functionality. Added optional portable apps from virtual HD image.
  • Portable apps now also in Vista and Win7 PEs available.
  • Imdisk now also in Vista and Win7 PEs available.
  • Completelly removed Win8 as source.

The ntoskrnl issue is a real bug.

You can fix it in your multiPE installation:

With an text editor open %BaseDir%\Projects\multiPE\PEFactory\PEFactory.ScriptPEFactory.Script and replace the line

If,%CopyLevel%,SMALLER,4,Begin

Nuno offers a different utility re7zip, which I use in multiPE. One of the advantages is that, compared to the other alternity, re7zip is fully supported in this forum.

Posted by pscEx on 30 January 2013 - 06:35 PM in Win8PE

Independent from my previous posts, just an answer to Medevil's question:

multiPE will never be one of the projects building from Win8 sources.

I'm currently preparing publishing of version 70, and I'm removing all Win8 stuff.

Reason: I feel as engineer, and for a real engineer a good solution is a solution with a high efficiency.

multiPE is thought as project which can help in emergencies. It is not intended, as other projects do, to offer an 'license free full Windows OS'.

In an emergency situation, I usually do not want to hear my favorite MP3 music. So, why include full audio support into the project?

And in case of running a rescue system, I really do not need Wallpapers or Win7 Pins or Win8 tiles ...

etc ...

An XP based multiPE would be sufficient for most cases, but sometimes a Vista or Win7 based one offers some more drivers ...

#166735 %HostOS% For Windows 8 32/64-Bit

Posted by pscEx on 28 January 2013 - 06:04 PM in Bugs on the latest stable edition of WinBuilder.exe

As long as you only want to detect client os then your code is ok. However server os like w2008r2, w2012 share the same major / minor versions as the client os. You also should look at wProductType:

http://msdn.microsof...3(v=vs.85).aspx

You are right, but IMHO it is not reasonable to create a new variable %HostOSType% telling the user about the functionality (client / server / domain controller) of the host in the network.

I do not know any WinBuilder script where this information is needed.

BTW: The title of this topic tells about 'latest stable ...'. This is currently WinBuilder 082. Max's video shows use of 083.

To avoid misunderstandings: 083 is not supported by the WinBuilder author Nuno Brito. It is currently only tolerated by him.

BTW2: For me, I added Win8 detection in my 'private' WinBuilder 083.

#166683 %HostOS% For Windows 8 32/64-Bit

Posted by pscEx on 27 January 2013 - 04:18 PM in Bugs on the latest stable edition of WinBuilder.exe

The answer is simple: When WinBuilder 82 has been published, a regular Win8 host was not yet known.

Here the code to evaluate %HostOS%:

procedure GetWinVersion;
var
  osVerInfo: TOSVersionInfo;
  majorVersion, minorVersion: Integer;
begin
  osVerInfo.dwOSVersionInfoSize := SizeOf(TOSVersionInfo);
  if GetVersionEx(osVerInfo) then
  begin
    minorVersion := osVerInfo.dwMinorVersion;
    majorVersion := osVerInfo.dwMajorVersion;
    if majorVersion <= 4 then
      HostOS := 'NT'
else if (majorVersion = 5) and (minorVersion = 0) then
      HostOS := 'W2000'
else if (majorVersion = 5) and (minorVersion = 1) then
      HostOS := 'XP'
else if (majorVersion = 5) and (minorVersion = 2) then
      HostOS := 'W2003'
else if (majorVersion = 6) and (minorVersion = 0) then
      HostOS := 'Vista'
else if (majorVersion = 6) and (minorVersion = 1) then
      HostOS := 'Win7';
  end;
end;

The 'Hidden' issue:

Never intended to have WinBuilder files hidden. I do not have any opinion what happens when an Admin starts a hidden App, or the app wants to access a hidden file.

There are no special premissions neeeded.

Add Depends to the PE.

Run it, and see which is missing. These missing files add to your crystaldiskinfo.script

#166560 The Universal PE

Posted by pscEx on 24 January 2013 - 05:53 PM in Windows PE

To avoid misunderstandings:

multiPE does NOT create an universal PE which can mix XP, Vista, Win7 functionality on demand. That's technically impossible.

But multiPE can create one CD / UFD containing PE1 / PE2 and PE3. Whenever technically it is possible, apps like a WEB browser, are only ONCE on the ISO / USB.

The decision which PE has to be booted, must be made by the user during boot of the ISO / USB.

#166403 Just a question about memory use

Posted by pscEx on 22 January 2013 - 04:55 PM in ImDisk

That is a huge thread and I have not followed all the background, so I think it would be better if you just ask your specific question here.

When you for example mounting an image file from the host HD, you can either do that by copying the image file to memory or let ImDisk use the image file directly. When ImDisk uses the image file directly, there is no memory needed for holding an image in memory, since all disk I/O goes directly to the image file. On the other hand, if you select to copy the image file to memory, ImDisk needs to allocate a virtual memory block the size of the image file to hold the disk image data. There needs to be either physical or pagefile memory needed for this, otherwise the memory allocation fails and you get an error message saying that the virtual disk could not be created.

Thanks, Olof, for that fast reply.

Maybe I made the question too complicated.

Simply, for me there is only one question:

I boot with e.g. 512 MB host memory (into XP PE): About 100 .. 200 MB are used for the PE and some apps.

There is NO swap file.

Can I now use ImDisk to mount a 1 GB file on a HDD, image created by ImDisk, and filled with some apps?

IMO I understood your explanation with 'Yes'. Can you confirm?

Thanks!

#166385 multiPE

What about a VM? :dubbio:
It will be slower, but you have total control on the amount of Ram assigned to it.

Or otherwise run IMDISK and make in it a drive using "virtual memory" (i.e. without making a backing image).
The size of the volume should be subtracted from available memory (but you will have probably to reduce anyway the pagefile to the bare minimum , if you have set it up as a fixed size based on a multiplier iof the 4 Gb or if it is "automatically managed").

Wonko

Maybe you understood my issue not completelly (Sorry for my low English knowledge).

Currently in a physical running PE (no emulator!) I'm using ImDisk, to open an existing image on one of the host's HDDs. Size of the image is predefined (In current tests 1 GB, but can become more or less). Works well on my 4 GB host.

The question is: How ImDisk manages that image of 1 GB, when the whole hosts's memory is only 512 MB?

To test this, I'm looking for an ability to artificially decrease the available memory of the current running REAL system.

Peter

#166380 multiPE

I think that ImDisk can give you a solution.

I'm currently experimenting with it, and will you hold actual with the results.

Peter

@Janusz!

Good news!

I managed to run ClamWin portable in an USB booted XP PE from a Virtual Disk Drive.

All steps have been done manually, and now I have to write a script doing that automagically.

That will work not only for ClamWim, but for any other portable app the user defines.

The only open question is memory: On my test system I have 4 GB. I do not know how to restrict to lower values for tests.

Maybe Google or somebody here is my friend ...
